CAMPUS UPDATE:-Senate Peg JAMB Form Fee To #2500, Result To Be Valid For 3 Years....

Senate at its plenary session yesterday has passed a resolution from
henceforth that the registration fee for the Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME) will now be N2,500 as against N5,650
that was paid by prospective students this year while recommending
that the validity of JAMB result to be extended to 3 years.

These 'recommendations', when amended into JAMB Act, would become
standing law which would solve a lot of problems faced by this
vulnerable class of Nigerians.

The decision was taken following the adoption of the report of the
Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund on the inquiry
into the new admission policy of the Joint Admission and Matriculation
Board (JAMB).

Meanwhile, the decision of the Senate has continue to generate
argument among Nigerians with some Nigerians supporting the decision
of the Red chamber while another school of thought believe its not the
best.

Speaking with Topup9ja, a parent who prefer to be anonymous said the
decision will not work but will rather compound the candidates
problem, "my dear people, extending jamb result beyond a year will not
work. It will compound the candidates problems. A lot of schools will
not admit from old results because of post utme. The policy is easier
said than done. #2500 for jamb form?
Will government be ready to subsidise this amount? We shall wait to
see how this can be done"

He continued, "As a parent, if your ward did not secure admission this
year with his/her score, probably because he/she did not meet the cut
off, will you rely on the same score for the coming year knowing fully
well that new results from fresh candidates can still dethrone that
score? With this resolution (not law), candidate cannot change
institution or even course thereby limiting their chance. It is pretty
difficult to implement if you know what testing for selection is all
about" he concluded.

Meanwhile a parent, Mr Gbadebo who is of the school thought that
support the resolution of the senate has commended the senate for the
decision they took yesterday, he asserted that "Its workable, the
candidate will only need to write the preferred university post jamb
exam, its criminal for any university to discriminate against this law
of the federation, its neither complex nor ambiguous"

He further said, "Where a candidate for example score 270 for medicine
in Ibadan in jamb but did not meet the uni Ibadan post UTME, such a
candidate can rely on that score for the next three years and can go
for medical Rehab. In UI with less competition in the coming year, or
pay for JAMB for change of university of course or both. So its in
order and the use of CBT bring down the cost per candidate, so N2500
jamb fee will still give JAMB contribution towards the recovery of its
fixed overheads"

He concluded by saying, "A lot of uni will admit base on old result
provided the candidate buy their form and meet the new cut off, it
connotes JAMB is only a clearing house hence forth, the policy is so
good, we only need to key into it and advise our children
accordingly."

The senate has also resolved to amend the Act establishing JAMB to
reflect the extension of the validity period.
