After so many postponements the NYSC Management wishes to inform all prospective Corps members that President Buhari has approved and released funds to the Scheme to hold its planned Orientation course according to a press release.
Consequently,
Management of the Scheme has scheduled the 2016 Batch A Stream II Orientation
course to commence from Monday 13th June to Wednesday 29th June 2016
Nationwide. Prospective Corps members are expected to log on to the NYSC Portal
to commence printing of their Call-up letters from TUESDAY (7/6/16) by 12noon
as the Call-up letters printed earlier are now invalid the release stated.
Also,
contrary to report on certain online and social media platform on the scraping
of NYSC by the Federal Government, the management of the scheme has stated there
is no official source for such information.
The
statement read, ‘usually since NYSC was
establish through a decree of the Government in 1973, it would have to be
terminated through a constitutional amendment from the National Assembly.
Members of the public are advised to not believe
any information concerning scraping or termination of National Youth Service
Corps (NYSC) scheme. The NYSC scheme was created in a bid to reconstruct,
reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war. The unfortunate
antecedents in our national history gave impetus to the establishment of the
National Youth Service Corps by decree No.24 of 22nd May 1973 which stated that
the NYSC is being established “with a view to the proper encouragement and
development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of
national unity”.
It was the need to look beyond the immediate
present and to think of the future leadership of the country that necessitated
the mobilization of certain categories of youths through the National Youth
Service Corps Scheme.
This was done with a view of giving them the proper
guidance and orientation relevant to the needs of the country. The National
Youth Service Corps Decree No. 24 which has now been repealed and replaced by
Decree 51 of 16th June 1993 was then formally promulgated.
A termination bill is not currently being reviewed
at the National Assembly.’
