Roman Abramovich was in attendance to watch Croatia overcome Spain in an exciting Euro 2016 encounter on Tuesday night but while the Chelsea owner would have enjoyed the spectacle, he had serious work to do.
According to the Telegraph, Abramovich flew to France to personally scout Spain striker Alvaro Morata. And he would have most likely been impressed with the 23-year-old scoring his third goal in the competition, placing him alongside Gareth Bale as Euro 2016's top scorer.
Antonio Conte is believed to have placed Morata at the top of his wish list but a bid in excess of £40million may be required to sign him. Real Madrid recently announced their decision to buy him back from Juventus after activating a clause that allowed them to do so for £23.6m.
Their intention is to quickly sell him on for a large profit and Chelsea have worked hard to place themselves at the front of the queue. However, Abramovich is not the free-spending sugar daddy he once was and wanted to get his own look at Morata before sanctioning a transfer bid.
Abramovich is likely to follow Spain around the competition in an attempt to get a firm idea of what Morata can bring to his Chelsea team. He is also believed to be keeping a close eye on Conte's Italy, who Spain will face in the round of 16.
